Bye Bye 2011.

Today is the last day of 2011.
Have you reflected on what your past year looked like?
I'm taking a few moments to do just that today.

It's so funny to me that we are actually about to be in the year 2012.
Coming home for this break is the first time in my life I have actually felt kinda old!

I mean I know I'm not old.
But it just doesn't seem like it is possible to be 2012 already.
I still consider my 2002 Lancer fairly new... and it's TEN years old!
I am seeing these kids I used to baby sit that are going into HIGH SCHOOL.
I have friends with babies.
I am getting married.

This was a crazy crazy year for me.
I was away from Matt for about half of it.
I went hiking in the mountains of Canada.
I got engaged.
I went 2,500 miles away to school.

I have leaned into God for everything.
I've turned my back on him.
And I've tried to take care of things for myself.

One of my favorite things to do for the end of a year is go through journals from the past year.
What was I feeling at different times throughout the year?

It's a little bitter sweet leaving 2011.
2011 was good to me.
Faithful to me.

But 2012 I think will be even better.
I get to marry the man of my dreams.
I'll be permanently (for awhile) moving to Virginia.
I will get to see many loved ones get married.
It's going to be a good one.

I've been thinking about my New Year's Resolutions.
I've gone back and forth between some.
How many can I have?
How many could I actually keep?
And these are what I have decided upon.

One:
I will pursue and live a healthy lifestyle.
To me this is a holistic healthy life.
From healthy body to healthy relationships to healthy spiritual life.

Two:
I will not let wedding planning stress me out!
Weddings can be stressful.
The truth is, it's just a wedding.
Why let the wedding be stressful to me when what I truly want is the marriage?

Three:
I will pursue love in every situation!
No matter the situation, love is the best answer.
Without love confrontation will turn out bad.
Without love a grumpy person will ruin your mood.
Without love you cannot forgive!
Love is the goal.

Challenge: Spend some time today reflecting on the last year. What went wrong, what went right? What do you want to be different in 2012?

Happy New Year!

You are Beautiful.

I don't know about you guys, but I love being told I'm pretty.
I'm pretty sure you do too.

What's not to like about it?

The point is that we love compliments.

For me, words of affirmation is my most prominent love language. I don't need people to tell me good job, or that I look nice, but it means the world when they do say these things.

Something I realized a couple years due to the help of my good friend, is how little we actually share words of affirmation with others.

How often do you walk around thinking, "oh that girl is really pretty" or "I love her makeup" or "I want her hair." I do all the time, and I know you do too.

Now I'm not saying be creepy.

But if you think to yourself, "hey, she has a very pretty face" or "I love how she puts together her outfits" TELL HER!

Why are we so shy to compliment people?

I don't know, but I know I keep a lot of compliments in my head.

Let's learn to share!

In my opinion, the saddest thing to see is a beautiful girl with zero confidence.

I know we sometimes get it in our heads that we are all against each other!

That we are competing for who can be the prettiest, skinniest, fittest, most stylish.

That's why we worry most about what other girls will think about us.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I hear a girl say "I hate her, she's so skinny" or "I wish I had her body"

The truth is, she works for what she has.

We don't need to "hate each other" or be jealous, we need to love them and tell them that we're proud!

Our job is not to lower their self esteem, but to build it up with words of encouragement.
And trust me, even the "prettiest" girls need to be affirmed.

Don't compare yourself to others.

Seek the individual, unique beauty that each one of us have and embrace it.

My challenge to you this week--and beyond if you have the guts--is to share these words of affirmation to the people you are thinking about!

Then share with me what you've told people.

Share the love, not the hate.

Love and Beauty,

Christmas or Pinterests?

Forgive me friends, I have been stuck with no internet for the past week!
Also, I've of course been extremely busy!
How was your Christmas?

Mine was wonderful.
Christmas Eve we went to our family friend's for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner there!
Christmas Day I worked in the morning with my best friend.

This is what we wore.
We were Christmas elfs.
You should have seen it.
Mimi actually made the shoes and hats!
And we both made the tutu's.

Later that day I went over to Matt's and we went to their family friend's traditional dinner.
{needless to say, I did not starve this past weekend.}

I got all kinds of wonderful gifts.
I was definitely spoiled.
I just cannot wait until next Christmas!
{Our first being married <3}

How about you?
Best Christmas ever?

Now onto the real post...
You know what today is.

What was Pinteresting to you this week?

One:

This is made out of string. I had to pin it because my friend actually made me something like this for Christmas! I tell you people I am a SUCKER for homemade gifts. She made the state of Washington with a  heart where my home town is so I won't miss it while I am in Virginia. I love it so much.

Two:

I am dying to make this for my bed stand when we get married! It is a sewed piece that looks like notebook paper and then you can writ notes on the glass every morning to your love.

Three:

If you are wondering how to wear a scarf, this is my favorite. So simple, yet vintage cute at the same time!

Four:

Warning: this is a little scandalous. It is a pole dancing competition. If you ask me, though it is classy and actually really incredible. I think it would kind of be awesome to take a class pole dancing or something fun like that! To change up your work out and get in touch with your sexy side ;] Girls only though.

Five:

This is hysterical to me. Matt and I have been using this kid's face for everything. Every time we find something out that we think is awesome or when we wanna over exaggerate how great something is... this is the face we use.

Promise to keep up to date now that I have internet!
If you have a blog and think I should see it, let me know!

New Year here we come,

Secrets of a Barista.

I have been back in Washington for about 4 days now.
I have worked every day since I have been back.
It has been such a blessing getting to make some money!

It's funny how things like making coffee come right back, just like riding a bike!

I decided that it is time everyone gets to see what is going on in the heads of their barista's though.

It's like a whole other world behind the counter in our little drive through box of caffeine, and because you are reading this blog... you get some secrets straight from a barista! ;]

One:

Lovely customers, when the neon "OPEN" sign is not on... No, we are not open. So please refrain from driving up after we close, waiting for me to come to the window, and disappointing you for not making an exception to the rules just to make you a drink past closing time... Because you're wasting both of our times. If we were open, I would turn on the "OPEN" sign.

Two:

I am sorry that I am the one to tell you this... But there is no such thing as a "Grande, 12oz" drink or an iced cappuccino...

Three:

When you order 9 shots of white coffee, the chances are you're actually getting nine, half-shots of white coffee. I'm sorry, but I'm not being charged with assisted suicide for when your heart stops from caffeine overload.

Four:

Rarely do we actually know your name... But you can basically count on us knowing what car you drive, what you drink, where you work, and who you're dating. Apparently after that our memories are no longer receptive.

Five:

It is still weird to us when you get whip cream on your sugar-free, non-fat latte.

Six:

As much as it's good for... Please spare us the nickel tip.

Seven:

It's really loud in there... So if you see a lot of smiling, nodding, and forced laughter during our conversation, I probably can't hear you. It's not for a lack of trying though, I promise.

Eight:

If you're going to wear a blue tooth, we ask that you put it on the side we can see so we don't answer your questions to the person on the phone.

Nine:

When we have been working too long and talking too fast, words get jumbled. If you notice mispronunciation or slurred words, feel free to laugh. EXAMPLE: "Mochanut"

Ten:

If we mistake your kid for a dog or vise versa, cut us some slack, we can't see through your tinted windows, we are only judging which it is based on your interaction with the said "kid-dog." {Yes, I have mistaken a child for a dog... I was not cut any slack.}

Disclaimer: these are only secrets of a Clancy's Coffee Barista, I can't speak for baristas of other locations.

I will say, this job is the best.

The interaction with people never gets boring, I love the girls I work with so much, I have fun making coffee, and my boss is awesome!

Thank goodness for Clancy's!

I truly feel blessed to have the privilege of working at such a fun environment with such amazing people!

Savor these secrets, not many people know them!

Love and Coffee,

So Many Pinterests.

3 Finals down 1 to go.
I'm sitting here waiting for White Glove Check out.
{Our RA literally comes in and checks how clean our room is with a white glove}
I should be using this time to be productive and study anatomy...
But instead I will take advantage of the break and blog.

It's Pinteresting Tuesday!

One:

I don't know if you guys watched this years Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. My roommates and I did. We're obsessed! This was my favorite part of the night by far! I love Adam Levine and his VS girlfriend Anne is adorable.

Two:

I was so impressed with these guys. This is so funny! And I may want to copy them.. Anyone up for it with me?

Three:

This is a concoction of 1 teaspoon of baking soda with a little bit of toothpaste. You brush your teeth with this once a week until you like the color of your teeth! Then you just do it once every or every other month. I will be doing this since I do have a big wedding coming up!

Four:

Read it. It is so funny! And so legit.

Five:

This is funny.. and also really pathetic.

Alright, good luck to you all who also have finals this week! Don't fret! Take time for yourself and study hard! We're so close to break!

Can't wait to see you all back home!

love,
xo/Austin

What about the Wedding?

One final down, three to go!
Study break to update you all on the wedding!

Heading home in less than a week and then the wedding planning really begins!
Plan while we are home:

Hand out/send our Save-the-Dates!
Yes, we got them and they are adorable! I was so proud of us for designing them! Be on the look out for one in the mail... or if I see you! (Unless I don't know you, then you probably won't get one. Please don't take it personal.)

Wedding Dress Buying!
I can't believe I am actually going to buy a wedding dress while I am home. It just blows my mind. But I cannot wait to try on with my mom and some of my favorite girls!

Tux Trying On!
We are having such a hard time deciding the men's attire. We wanna do cowboy boots for the girls for the reception, and we ned to find a tux color to match... I just can't wait to see my gorgeous fiancé in a fancy wedding tux!

Bridesmaid Bonding Time!
I miss my girls back home so much! And I can't wait to shop and plan and make with them throughout the entire break.

More Engagement Pictures!
Our photographer for the wedding is going to take some more engagement photos while we are there! I have some ideas on how to have some fun taking pictures, it's just convincing Matt that it's a good idea...

My Mom's Wedding!
That's right! My momma is getting married on January 1! So we get to celebrate a wedding while we're home and have a blast! I am so excited to just have fun and support them!

I'm sure there is so much more to do while I am home, but these are on the top of the list!
Can't wait to be done with these tests and get home to start!

Hope y'all have a great weekend!
Home Stretch.
Keep it up,
xo/Austin

I Love Christmas.

I love Christmas.
I don't think I am the only one you know who would say that.

I love this entire season.

Some of my favorite Holiday treats:

One:
White Christmas.

I love it.
I mean, I really, really love the movie White Christmas.
I love the outfits, and the dancing, and the music.
I watch it at least 10 times every Christmas season.
It's bad.

Two:
Presents.

I love everything about presents.
Giving them, getting them, making them.
I just love the love that comes from giving presents!

Three:
Chai tea with egg nog.

It's sinfully good.
But definitely enough calories to fill up an entire day, so must be limited!

Four:
Coffee dates.

I feel like Christmas time, while everyone is home is the best time for coffee dates!
I can't wait to get back and catch up with some of my favorite people!

Five:
Opening Stockings.

I don't know why I love it so much.
It's always been my favorite part of Christmas morning!
It just reminds me of my mom and I love it!

Six:
Ugly Christmas Sweater Christmas Parties!

That's right, I love them.
I have the best ugly sweater, and I love to rock it!
Besides, when else can you dress hideously and be complimented?

Needless to say, I love Christmas.
Mostly everything about it.

Question: What are your favorite Christmas traditions?

Happy Holidays!

Healthy > Skinny.

I don't know about you guys, but I find it really hard to live with the expectations placed upon us from media and magazines in our generation.

The problem with that is that many of the skinny "role models" we are expected to look up to are not healthy! Some are of course, but even when they are, their healthy lifestyles are not nearly as talked about as how they look.

I know for me it is easy to get wrapped up in wanting to be skinny and looking over how important it is to be healthy.

I just finished up a health class here at school and learned so much about how important our health is.

No just being at the appropriate weight, but skin health, gum health, heart health, etc.

For me I have decided that I am not going to give into what the media is telling us is important.

Yes, being a healthy weight and body fat % is very important for numerous health reasons, but not if you're doing it by not eating or pumping your body with cancer causing chemicals.

What I am doing to take care of myself...

I am brushing my teeth at least twice a day and flossing in the morning and at night.
{this sounds so lame. And I feel like I am your dentist trying to convince you to floss. But the truth is that brushing your teeth only gets 60% of the gunk you need to get. Flossing is such an easy way to take care of your teeth and it always leads me to feeling accomplished for even that little part of taking care of myself.}

I am stretching for about 20 minutes every day.
{Even if I don't make it to the gym, stretching is an easy way to keep your muscles active. I think stretching is a part of our exercise that is often looked over. How many of us actually include stretching in our workout? I haven't in the past unless I felt like I "needed it." The truth is we always need it!}

I am eating a good healthy breakfast every morning!
{This one is so important! Especially being in college, it is so easy to just wake up and roll out of bed and go to class without fueling up for the day. Or worse, eating a donut or some sugary morning treat. What I have been eating is egg whites with a slice of low fat cheese on a half of a "Thin Buns" (yes I do get that brand specifically because it is funny that it is called thin buns... ) with a piece of fruit! It is the best way to wake up!}

I am drinking a ton of water.
{I think this is one of the main reason people don't lose the weight they are trying to lose! Keeping hydrated is probably the most important part of your diet. I drink half of my body weight in ounces every day. Example: If you weight 150 lbs, drink 75 ounces of water a day. Even if you are eating right and exercising everyday, without drinking water, you could still gain weight!}

I am staying away from sweets and carbs as much as possible.
{Don't get me wrong, I am not killing myself not eating something if I am really craving it. But I am finding the less sweets I eat, the less I crave candy or chocolate. Just push through the initial cravings and it really does get easier. And it makes such a big difference! I have also read that the combination of sugar and carbohydrates (like bread and starchy potatoes) is what stalls weight loss and often leads to weight gain.

I am wearing sun protection.
{Even when it's not sunny. I have always been against tanning and all that... but especially after taking this health class has made me realize how scary skin damage is! Did you know: if you have tanned just up to 10 times within a year before you are 35 you have a 75% better chance of getting melanoma than someone who hasn't. I know that woke me up! There is so much more frightening information about skin damage that I could share. Basically what I am saying, is take care of your skin. It's not worth the glow, seriously.}

I am moisturizing every day.
{Being so young, it's hard to believe that our skin might not be as young one day. But I know so many older people (even 5 years older!) that have told me that they wish they would have started moisturizing every day so their skin would still look and feel young. Do it. You're future self will appreciate it!}

 I am getting some kind of exercise in every day.
{This is the hardest for everyone I think. It's hard to find time. It's hard to get to the gym. After you have to shower. There are a million excuses and I have used all of them. The truth is that exercise not only releases endorphins and make you feel good about yourself and feel happy, but it is vital to your health. Did you know you are supposed to get 60 minutes of moderate to difficult exercise every single day? The way I am keeping this up is by not getting down on myself if I have an off day. I make sure I do 100 squats or lunges every single day! And I try to do more than that, but if I don't make it to the gym, I am learning to be proud of what I have accomplished and set a higher goal for the next day.}

{One of my maid of honors and I are planning on training for a half marathon this summer, so I am starting to look into running more. What is the best way to train. How others stick with it. How people make the time. What trains you best. And looking up different plans online to see what I think would be the best one for me.}

{I have also found that it is really important to keep your workout routine fun! I found an app for my iPhone! It's called Nike Training Center. It has exercise routines for 30-45 minutes that are made with an interval mindset. I am finding that I enjoy intervals so much more than just your normal reps and sets. I like being pushed with a time limit and I like sweating while I'm doing weights! And let me tell you, I am sore after the workouts!}

{I am also trying to make sure I take advantage of burning fat while doing my cardio by doing the HIIT training. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. Basically you do intervals of going low, medium, and hard during your cardio sessions. For example: If you are on the treadmill your interval would look like this: 2 minute walk, 5 minute jog, 1 minute sprint, 2 minute walk, 5 minute jog. Then repeat that interval 4 times for an hour cardio work out! It's tough, but also more fun than an hour of just jogging on the treadmill. And it burns many more calories and fat! Not to mention I always feel like I accomplished so much every time I step off the treadmill!}

I recently found this blog that is awesome!
It's called Tone It Up.
And the girls that run the site are so encouraging and full of information! Check them out!

I just want to encourage you all to take care of yourself! Especially right now as Christmas is coming up and everyone is out of their daily routine. It's okay to have fun! It's important to spend quality time with family and friends. I just encourage you to think about your health as these things are taking place! Maybe pick the apple over the donut once in awhile, I can guarantee you will feel better! Don't kill yourself to fit into the size 2 jeans the magazines are telling you you need to. But Don't kill yourself with apathy and ignorance about your health either.

Life is about living with a purpose.
So work hard.
Make goals.
And enjoy the food.

Blessings,
xo/Austin
